Clean Dryer Vents Prevent Dryer Fires: Advice from the Wizard of Hampton

During National Fire Prevention Month in October, consumers are made aware that over 15,000 clothes dryer fires are reported each year, causing major damage to homes, loss of lives and many injuries. Failure to clean dryer vents was the cause of most of these fires.

There are many companies who repair, install and clean dryer vents. The internet is loaded with articles and blogs all warning consumers about the danger of clogged dryer vents; not to mention the increase in utility expenses when clothes dryers are not venting properly.

So Many Dryer Vent Cleaners; Yet, So Many Dryer Vent fires

Morgan County, West Virginia: Home destroyed by fire that started with a clogged dryer vent. The Red Cross helped the family with lodging; they lost everything.

Fayetteville, NC: Firefighters wee called to a home around 11:00pm when a fire started in the laundry room. A dryer vent that was clogged with lint overheated and ignited. Flames gutted the laundry room and caused extensive smoke and soot damage throughout the home. Four adults and a teenager escaped safely and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Mount Crawford, VA: More than 40 firefighters were called to the scene of a two-alarm fire as flames ripped through the two-story home early in the morning. Windows shattered and firefighters had to cut hole in the side of the home to vent the flames. Thankfully, no one was hurt as smoke detectors woke the homeowner who escaped unharmed, but extensive damage was done to the 150 year old home. Firefighters said there are a lot of hidden, concealed spaces in older homes for fire to go, so they had to open walls as flames spread up to the second floor and into the attic.

South Middleton, PA – The fire broke out around 10pm; started in the laundry room. Several firefighters suffered minor burns while fighting the blaze. The malfunctioning electric dryer was the cause of the fire which left 3 family members homeless and killed 2 of the family’s dogs.

Cumberland, W. VA: 22 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire that left a couple and their young son homeless. The family was having dinner when they smelled smoke and discovered a fire in the laundry room. They escaped without injury with over $70,000 in damage to the home and loss of contents. The fire originated in the clothes dryer.

Pulaski, TN: A clothes dryer caused a fire in the attached garage of a home causing damage to the dryer and a wall as it made its way into the attic. The fire was quickly extinguished and firefighters used a positive pressure fan to remove smoke from the home. Damages were estimated to be no more than $3,500.

Dryer fires are caused by a combination of excessive heat and blockage of air flow. If there is a lint build-up in the system then you have the combustibles needed to start a fire.
